  • A fixed solar panel mounted flat (horizontally) will be about 75% effective. A 130Watt panel will provide an average of 97.5Watts.
  • A fixed solar panel positioned at its optimum angle (facing true north) will be about 85% effective. 130Watt panel will provide an average of 110.5Watts.
  • A sun tracking solar panel will be 100% effective. A 130Watt panel will provide an average of 130Watts
  • Work on 5 peak sun hours per day for best economics, and expect that some days the battery may discharge more if consumption can not be reduced.
  • Solar Panels should provide 30% of the battery charge capacity per day.
  • Deep cycle AGM batteries can be operated in the range from 90% charge to 60% charge.
  • Deep cycle AGM batteries require about 10% more energy to charge than what they deliver.
  • A fridge will consume from 5 to 7 Watt-hrs per litre of capacity per day on average in summer (32deg C day). A110 litre fridge will consume about 595 Watt-hrs/day. Larger fridges are usually more efficient and consume the lesser Watt-hrs/litre
  • A microwave will consume 72 Watt-hrs to boil a mug of water at room temperature.
  • An electric kettle will consume 114 Watt-hrs to boil four mugs of water at room temperature.
  • A toaster will consume around 36 Watt-hrs to toast two slices of bread.
  • A washing machine will consume around 65 Watt-hrs per 5.5kg complete wash and spin.
