System Sizing

When sizing our systems, we carefully calculate the minimum required system to suit your needs. Our calculations are based on the following method:

  1. The daily amp hour requirements are calculated based on the following: applications required to run, type of power required (AC or DC), period of time the applications will be drawing current, and any inefficiencies in the system.
  2. This figure is then used to work out the optimal solar panel size and quantity.

  3. Based on the daily output of the solar array, the battery bank is sized so that the daily output of the solar array can replace a percentage of the battery bank each day. This is based on the optimal daily depth of discharge (DoD) for the type of battery to prolong the battery life. Watts2c's systems only use AGM deep cycle batteries with an optimal DoD of 30%.
  4. If AC power is required by any of the specified applications, an inverter is selected based on twice the load of the largest AC application.
  5. If a battery charger is required, this is selected at a charging rate of 20% of the battery bank, as any higher charge capacity will not be optimal for the life of the battery.
